Greetings from Kathmandu

Greetings from Kathmandu!

Since my last post I've had very limited cell phone wifi.

We climbed up, nearing Kala Pattar, before turning around due to my altitude sickness.

The morning of the 25th we woke up at 4:30 AM for our summit attempt. After an hour I was quite ill, blue lipped, and vomiting. We turned around and made our way back to our lodge in Langboche.

After a quick breakfast we headed down the mountain. I felt better with every step back down!  We had a very long day making it all the way to Namche Bazaar. (35km in total plus a descent of nearly 2000 meters)

Yesterday morning we woke up and headed down with a goal of reaching Lukla. As we made our way down the mountain we had a final surprise!  A helicopter was picking us up in Phackding to bring us back to Kathmandu!  We scurried to our ride and last night enjoyed a private bathroom and shared a bed for the first time since we left! (We've been sleeping in twin beds with shared toilets in the hallway.  On the night I was the most sick, my birthday, we had an outhouse!)

Questions being answered soon San Miguel boys!

Checking in!

Not sure if this will post!  We've passed through Pangboche and are en route to Dongla. Tomorrow we hope to make it to Gorak Shep with an evening summit of Kala Pattar. Not sure when wifi will be available next!

Updates soon to San Miguel students questions!

Acclimating in Namche Bazar

Hello!

After a hike yesterday we had an early night to bed. Up at 7am, we had our breakfast and headed out hiking. While acclimatizing it is important to climb higher then come down lower to sleep. We hiked up 600 meters (about 1800 feet) and walked 11km or approximately 7 miles.

As we got higher we had our first glimpses of Mount Everests summit peaking out from behind a cloud in addition to a fantastic view of Ama Dablam and other high peaks.

We returned to our hotel for lunch and will rest for the afternoon.

Tomorrow we will hike 15-20km to Pangboche which lies approximately at 4,000 meters.

I've been posting a lot of photos on my Instagram account @cabuhaidar but will also add a few here!

Please note, after tomorrow I will have more and more limited access to wifi.

Questions for Miss K's San Miguel Students

Hello San Miguel Students!

Thank you for your awesome questions!

Before we head out for our morning hike I will answer the first round that was sent in by Miss K!

Are you scared?
Colleen: yes, because this is my first time up here and I'm not quite sure what to expect.
Walid: no, I know we're prepared and we are being very safe.

Is it cold?
The sun here is very strong even though the temperatures are low. Sitting in the sun you can wear a t-shirt but when the sun goes away it gets very chilly. As we go higher up it will get much colder. We haven't reached snow yet.

Where have you travelled?
Since we've been married we have traveled through the Caribbean by sailboat visiting Bermuda, Tortola, the Dominican Republic, Puuerto Rico and many more islands there.
In South America we have visited: Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Panama, and Colombia.
We've visited Morocco in North Africa as well as Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In the Middle East we have been to Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Egypt, and Lebanon.
In Asia we have been to Myanmar, Bhutan, Thailand, Nepal, and Japan.
In Europe we live in Spain, very close to the French border so we go to France nearly every weekend!  We've also been to Portugal, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Andorra, Finland, Denmark, Greenland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, England, & Scotland.

What is your favorite place you have travelled?
Walid: Barcelona because it's where he chose to live.
Colleen: I agree but I love to always visit new places! I love France, Italy, and Colombia too. There are so many amazing places it's hard to say!

Are you an explorer?
I think we would both answer yes. We aren't an explorer in the sense of Magellen, Columbus, Edmund Hillary, or Shackleton who truly explored the unknown, however, we like to experience new places, new smells, new food, and different cultures. If your mind is open to these different ideas, then you too are an explorerer and adventurer. You can even find your own explorations and adventures a bus or car ride away!

Where do you stay when you travel?
We prefer to stay with friends if we can, but if we don't know anybody we stay in hotels. We camp sometimes as well. On this trip we are staying in lodges called teahouses. They have restaurants, beds, a shared bathroom and shower but they are very comfortable. We are paying $3.00 to sleep tonight!

(Where we are staying tonight)

What is the fastest anyone has climbed Mt Everest?
The fasted speed from Everest Base Camp is just over 8 hours.

What animals have you seen?
We saw monkeys in Kathmandu. Since arriving to the mountains we have seen lots of yak, horses, and a few goats. There are red pandas and snow leopards who live here but so far we haven't seen them.

What language do the Nepalese people speak?
The people of Nepal speak Nepalese, however, in the region we are in the speak mostly Sherpa. They Sherpa people are an ethnic group based in the mountains of Nepal who lived of the land, until recently, when Mountain climbing became popular and now they are some of the best mountain climbers in the world.

What religion are the people of Nepal?
The people of Nepal are mainly Buddhist, but there are also Hindu, Muslim, and Christians as well. (Not many)

What are they doing in front of the fire?
Monkey temple is a Buddhist site still used by locals. The ladies by the fire were performing a local relgious ceremony.

What do the people eat? What are we eating?
We are eating fairly similar cuisine to the locals up until today as it's easy to bring food up. The locals like spicy food...and I do too!
Yak is a popular dish here, as is chicken and rice.
There are also lots of noodles, soups, teas, and bread.
My favorite snack is called a momo. It is like a dumpling filled with vegetables, beef, chicken, or pork.

Kathmandu, Lukla, Monju, Namche Bazar

Greetings from Namche Bazar!

After an early morning yesterday we boarded a small airplane to Lukla. Lukla serves as the base town for many treks in the Nepalese Himalaya, including the town where people begin their climb of the Southern face of Mount Everest.
(Walid sitting in the small airplane waiting to take off)

(Our first glimpse of the Himalayan Peaks on our plane ride from Kathmandu)

After landing in Lukla our trek began. We walked 10-12 miles to reach the town of Monju where we would spend the night. Tired after an early start we were fast asleep by 9pm!

This morning (Monday) we woke up, ate our eggs and tea and began our 4.5 mile walk up to Namche Bazar, a small town only accessible by foot. It is at a higher altitude of 3550 meters, or around 11,000 feet.

(A bridge crossing on our way up the mountain)

This afternoon we will walk a bit higher to help our bodies acclimatiZe to the altitude.
(Arriving into Namche Bazar)

A few yaks we passed on our way to our hotel. Hidden behind the clouds is a snow covered peak poking out.

Another view from Namche Bazar.

Stay tuned!!!

Touched down in Kathmandu!

Stay tuned for our latest adventure as we begin to trek the Everest Circuit tomorrow. Our helpful friends and family back home will be posting as well if we have bad connection!

After an early flight Friday morning to Istanbul, a long layover, and an overnight flight into Kathmandu we will enjoy a good sleep before waking up early to catch our flight to Lukla (2800 meters) where our trek will begin. If all goes well we may make it to Namche Bazaar (3440 meters) by tomorrow evening.

Day 1, kathmandu

Busy streets of Thamal, Kathmandu

Good morning!

After arriving yesterday (Saturday) at 7am we spent the day collecting last minute items and things we may have forgotten!

We also had time to enjoy exploring the city of Kathmandu.

I've attached a few photos!

All of these photos were taken at Swayambhunath, also known as Monksy Temple.

12 in 12…we did it!

The 3 Peaks team in front of Ben Nevis…adventure 1!  (With a 1 week pregnant Lucy little did she know…see our September adventure to see how she changed.)

"It's not an adventure until something goes wrong" — Yvon Chouinard

As we began our challenges we called them "adventures", though, I must agree with Yvon Chouinard the King of adventurers…its not really an adventure until something goes wrong, so please bare with me as we run down our 12 adventures/challenges of the year. (and get a behind the scenes look at the good, the bad, and the less than glamorous side)

Adventure #1: The 3 Peaks Challenge

I must admit this was perhaps my favorite adventure.  Whats not to love, combining friends, travel, and an ultimate challenge, the 3 highest peaks in the UK, with 500 miles of driving in between and completing it in under 24 hours…in January!  This was an ADVENTURE!  Beginning on with Burns night in Scotland, taking off with a successful and clear summit of Ben Nevis, before heading through the floods and snow fields to get towards Scaffel Pyke where we were nearly blown off by the wind, and finishing with a successful, calm, Snowden summit in under 24 hours.  Between floods, wrong GPS directions, and howling winds in the middle of the night, we thought we wouldn't make it…much to our surprise…we finished with under 30 minutes to spare!

#2:  The Panama City 1/2 IronMan

I would certainly qualify this as a challenge, certainly for me a mental as well as physical challenge.  I am so scared of racing that its gets in the way of my training…but when i'm out there I love it…weird, right?  So thought a 1/2 IronMan is physically challenging this was certainly more of a mental barrier…getting out there, jumping into the Panama Canal and I was off…biking over the canal and running around the canal…despite the heat (which I thrive in though most suffer) I couldn't think of a better first 1/2 IronMan!

#3 Barcelona Marathon

Yes, nerves got the best of me once again…which led to a bit of a party the night before as Walids sweet attempt to calm my nerves…the early alarm was not welcome at any rate, followed by the fear that I had a marathon to run!  Note to anyone reading this: if you keep a blog of your adventures/challenges its a GREAT incentive not to back out!  Had it not been for the blog I may have not made this marathon.  Yet we made it to the starting line just in time and I ran my best marathon ever!  For a while it looked as though I may break 4 hours (my ultimate goal) but with my not ideal training schedule (due to nerves and love of cava) I ended happily with a 4:19.

The Broken Toe…led to a bit of a back up in adventures

#4 Conquering the Rio Mondego
A beautiful Kayak down 20 km of Portugals Mondego River…with stops for snacks, local cuisine, and a watersnake sighting plus a dip in the river, we ended happily but tired.  This is a highly achievable challenge if you find yourselves in Portugal as it is downriver.  (Behind the scenes…makes 20km seem like nothing but makes you look and feel like a champ!  Because you are!)

#5 Climbing the highest mountain in Spain in the Sierra Nevada…nothing crazy to report, a standard climb in a beautiful place!  Highly recommended…dress WARMLY!

#6 The Bromptons hit Barcelona…

taking the two highest peaks in the city of Barcelona in one day…by our foldable bikes…one peak with our faithful friend Pepi in the basket.  This was a challenge 1) due to the July heat and 2) because of the foldable bikes weight and limited gears.  We had a blast and it was incredible to see Barcelona from the 2 highest points.

#7 Puigmal (the name says it all)
Our next adventure took us to France to attempt a summit of Puigmal-a mountain that intimidated me not only because of its name, but I've had failed summit attempts in the past due to fatigue, weather, etc. This proved to be a success boasting gorgeous views and we have repeated this hike several times.

#8 Coma Pedrosa:

Heading up the highest mountain in Andorra was a challenge as we hit higher altitude yet it was a beautiful day.  Chased down by a thunderstorm at the end added an element of adventure but we ended the day happy and tired.

#9 Marathon du Medoc

We once again were joined by our first adventure group Angus and Lucy…this time Lucy 8 month pregnant.  Lucy was a cheerleader this time but by all means part of the challenge.  Angus, Walid and I ran the Marathon du Medoc, a fancy dress marathon which had a science fiction theme this year…we ran as Avatar.  As Lucy and Pepinot cheered on from the sidelines Walid, Angus, and I tasted our Bordeaux through the full marathon!

#10 The Carlit Summit

A gorgeous day boasting gorgeous views we summited without problem the highest mountain in the Languedoc-Rousillon region of France…Pepi included.  3 adventurers, all succeeded!  This is a great climb…if you're ever in this region I would highly suggest taking a jab at it, or if you're a less comfortable climber going up with a guide.  It is super straight forward and easy but it does get you up to altitude if you haven't experienced that before.  (The same goes for Como Pedrosa in Andorra)

#11 The Bagan Temple Marathon

Perhaps the most anticipated adventure for me…and yes, I would say this was an adventure…between heat stroke, colonitis, and a successful marathon finish for both Walid and me we were very happy.  Myanmar is a beautiful country and we were so happy to be there!!  We enjoyed everything from the capital Yangon, to the temples of Bagan, to our few days of r&r on the Mergui archipelago.

#12 Circumnavigation of Lac du Bouilloses

Our final adventure ended just before Christmas!  My sister and I took of (with Pepi) bright and early one morning to head back into the Languedoc Rousillon region of France.  After a 5km snowshoe trek in we circumnavigated 12km around the lake, in summer used as a hydro-electric dam, before trekking another 5km back down.  Crossing frozen rivers, water falls, and heading through pine forests we classify this as a challenge in which we rightfully earned our vin chaud.

Taking on the challenge of 1 adventure a month is a lot.  As I said before keeping the blog is great as it keeps you motivated…you can easily cancel on yourself but when you see that people are following you one feels a responsibility to follow through.

The point was to raise money and awareness for Women for Women International which it did.  It was amazing to see that every place I went and shared what I was doing, people in that country checked in on the blog.  In the end I had people checking in from all over the world…so if nothing else the message was spread…but that wasn't all.  Through the generosity of LDV Hospitality and Eric Stewart of Viridian energy I raised thousands of dollars, not including the donations of family members, and the additional sponsorships made by friends and other family members.

I hope that if you are reading this you can see that it doesn't have to be 12 adventures, but the act of getting out of your element and sharing it with others can make a difference for a charity of your choice.

Stay tuned to the Facebook page and blog as I continue to challenge myself throughout the years for other charities.  Womens charities in general are close to our heart as is the Alzheimers Association of America, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, and general fundraising for breast cancer and the Ovarian Cancer Research fund.

A final thank you to Paulette Fox, our good friend and founder of LifeIce.  As you may have seen if you followed she kept us nourished and replenished with LifeIce after every adventure.  If you haven't visited the website yet, please take the time to visit www.lifeice.com  This is a true story of a daughters love becoming her mothers legacy.

Finally, if you have a iPhone or Android and you walk, run, or bike please download the app Charity Miles!  It is an incredible app that logs money for charity for every step you put in…every mile matters and even the smallest of walks can make a difference.

Thank you for following as we made our adventures and I appreciate each and every one of your support…notes, messages, even blog views.

XOXO
Colleen

Happy 2014!

A belated Happy New Year from the adventurers.  Coming soon is a summary of our experience during our year of adventures…from the highlights to the low times.  Don't think with 2014 our adventuring is ending!  We already have signed up for the Great Wall Marathon in China in May, Walid will continue his efforts fundraising for Athletes to End Alzheimers as we head to South Africa for his 4th IronMan, plus a wonderful 6 day stage run this summer through the Fjords of Denmark with Albatros Travel!  With a few more hopefully up our sleeve!  So stay tuned, and keep up the good work!

My hope by beginning this adventure was to show that anyone can make a change.  I am by no means a professional athlete…if you look at my race results I am literally average.  I train, I enjoy, I do my best, and I make the most of every event I partake in.  Whether you work up to walking or running a local 5K, 1/2 marathon or go the crazy distance with an Everest Climb every little thing you do can make a difference.

As the year continues I will continue to post events that draw attention to important charities.  In London and around the United States there are often events for Run for the Congo for WFWI, but there are so many more great events out there!

Stay tuned for my detailed report of our years adventure.  Can you guess which was my favorite?

And do you have any adventures up your sleeve for 2014?

Colleen
